Cycling couple get in the saddle to help charities

A couple from Hutton Cranswick have raised over £2,100 for three charities, including one based in Beverley, after completing a challenge to ride as many miles as possible on their bikes for 30  days.

Mike and Karen Sellers recently handed over £725 each to the Beverley Cherry Tree Community Centre, Young Lives vs Cancer and children’s cancer charity Candlelighters after donating £1 to all  three causes for every mile they completed.

Some of the rides, which concluded a day early on 12th September, saw Mike and Karen travel together, whilst others saw them hit the road solo.

The challenge was particularly difficult one for Karen, who was getting back on her bike for the first time in 18 months. Mike told Beverley Life how he and Karen decided to get in the saddle to give something back to three charities that are close to their hearts.

“The final session of our charity cycling 30-day challenge finished one day early, with our bodies sore in many areas – bottoms, hands, calves but everything was worth it to raise funds for Candlelighters, the Beverley Cherry Tree Community Centre and Young Lives vs Cancer,” he said. “We managed to cycle 725 miles between us and spent approximately 50 hours in the saddle, which generated £725 for each of the charities.

“We have had a close connection to the Cherry Tree Community Centre for the last two years and the two cancer charities helped a young family member a few years to successfully beat cancer.

Mike and Karen Sellers present a cheque to Jo Ramsay, manager of Beverley Cherry Tree Centre “Thanks to everyone for their support and encouragement as it all helped. We had sun, plenty of wind, and rain but that was all part of what this challenge was about.
“Hopefully it gives other people motivation for similar scenarios. I want to give special praise to Karen. She did this from a standing start a had not cycled for a long time, but she with things and despite the aches and pains cracked on with it.

“The bikes are now safely stored and will be for a while until next time.”
